2011 Bear Valley Music Festival Artist
Donald R. Ewen
“Using a unique style for watercolor I create paintings that go beyond the imagery, hoping that the art lover becomes an active viewer, seeing bold brush strokes of colors that if viewed from varied distances can be described from abstract nonrepresentational to near photo realism”
Donald Ewen’s Watercolor style is all his own– leading the viewer into the artwork to discover something new and exciting about familiar images. Using the full color spectrum in each piece works to pull colors together from most rooms in which they hang. Working both small and large Donald’s smaller works are mostly floral from his spring and fall gardens. The larger works are mainly landscapes or scenescapes of California’s open spaces, the Sierras, or wine country.
“I try not to paint what I call Monuments, (recognizable images of specific places) but a feeling of place and time (early morning on a trail through native oaks).”
Donald Ewen has been a Watercolor artist since 1984, mentored by James L. Kirk at Oregon College of Education now Western Oregon State University, Donald holds a BS in Elementary Education and minor practices in Fine Art. Over nearly 30 years his work has evolved into a sophisticated, some would say impressionistic format by always finding something new to discover about the medium and mastering a style to represent it. His original works can be found around the world in private collections and commercial applications.
